Mission
OFFICIAL LAUNCH ON THE 26TH OF JANUARY, 2010
What is ST project?
Spoken Tutorial was established at IIT Bombay with the funding from the Ministry of Education (previously Ministry of Human Resource Development). The use of spoken tutorials to popularize software learning and its use will be coordinated through this website.
The main objective of this project is to promote IT literacy for education and improve the employment potential of learners in India, using FOSS (free and open source software). ICT is an important area that provides jobs to a large number of our students. Software creation, electronic design automation (IC design), numerical computing, and modelling and simulation are some of the ICT areas. We aim to pass on the knowledge of technology and free and open source software (FOSS) through the website to the millions in our country, who lack opportunities and/or access to learn any software.
Some reasons for these gaps in access are:
Lack of knowledge about accessibility
Lack of proper guidance
Lack of infrastructure facilities available
Difficulty in understanding English
Definition of ST and its usage:
ST is a 10-minute long audio-video tutorial created using the screencast methodology where the face of the person creating the video is not captured, rather the students are shown the lesson to learn. The spoken part of ST is dubbed into all Indian languages and one can use ST to learn a topic, called a tutorial. This distinguishes ST from rest of the other video tutorials available online. It can be used in offline mode as well and hence is useful to those who do not have access to Internet.
STs can be used to raise the levels of teaching/learning in educational institutions of higher learning through the ICT based pedagogic tools. Although this may be useful to all fields, we will have a special focus on science and engineering, considering the vast scope and our limitations to cater to everyone.
The following popular open source ICT tools can be mapped to the course curriculum of colleges:
Python, Scilab, eSim, OpenFOAM, DWSIM, OpenModelica
and
Osdag
. The ST pedagogic methods can help to integrate such tools in regular teaching.
The following popular open source ICT tools can be mapped to the course curriculum of schools:
LibreOffice, Geogebra, Jmol, GChempaint, Avagadro, GIMP, Inkscape, Blender, Firefox, and KTurtle, C, Java
and
Python programming
. The ST pedagogic methods can help integrate such tools in regular teaching.
One can access the website (http://spoken-tutorial.org/) to know the various facets of this program. It has been established as an effective instructional methodology.
Resource Centres
and
Nodal Centres
help sustain and spread this activity across India.
Target audience and contributors:
This project is for the community and by the community. The target group is the community at large, including school children, college students, working professionals, retired professionals, housewives, teachers, trainers, research scholars, software users and developers. Through the portal, we aim to reach out to like-minded individuals to collaborate with us and with each other, to create Spoken Tutorial courses. Each of the tutorials, whether original or dubbed, go through a strict review procedure, after which they are uploaded on the public domain. This is to ensure that the highest possible quality is attained.
We also conduct workshops using Spoken Tutorials and give certificates to those who pass an online test. For more information on workshops, please write to
contact@spoken-tutorial.org
Through the website you can:
Learn many software by yourself.
Be a contributor to the community by creating original tutorials or dubbing into other languages
Lead the national effort for any FOSS
Lend your expertise in a particular FOSS by being a Reviewer / Domain Expert
Help conduct workshops in colleges and schools across India
Spread awareness about this project. Become a promoter or an ambassador
To achieve our aims, we must:
Reach out to as many people as possible to spread the awareness of the portal so that people can learn and contribute.
Build up the community so that the portal will be self-sustaining
Channelize a way through our contacts to reach out to the people who wish to learn and contribute.
Don't forget to check

frequently because we add at least five new tutorials weekly! You are free to use any of the tutorials featured on this site for self-study and educational purposes. We look forward to partner with you in our effort to take software education to the masses and to bridge the Digital Divide! We hope that you will find the information on this site helpful.
